The number of volunteer firefighters in Pennsylvania is at an all-time low, being described by state officials at a "crisis level". YOU can help be a solution to the crisis.

Full membership:
- Residence within 1 mile of the border of Whitehall Borough, Allegheny County.
- Work full time (with an affidavit from employer) or owning property in Whitehall Borough.
- Be at least 16 years of age for JR membership and 18 for full membership.
- Complete an application.
- Pass a criminal background check and the Pennsylvania Child Abuse History Clearance Check.
- Please reach out directly if this class of membership interests you. This class is mainly directed at individuals who are already experienced firefighters that would like to work on our shift crew and run calls without the full requirements of membership.
Active firefighters respond to fire calls, attend weekly company drills, and attend monthly company meetings. If you are interested in becoming a member, you may either:

- Visit Station 1 at 4400 Clairton Blvd. on the third Monday of the month (second Monday in December) at 6:45 p.m. to pick up an application before the company monthly meeting.
Application Process:
Applicants must attend a company meeting on the third Monday of any month (second Monday in December) 6:45p for the first reading of their application to the membership. Company representatives will meet with the applicant to discuss expectations of a Whitehall firefighter. All clearances must be completed and turned in prior to the applicants second reading at a following company meeting.
Application Process for Applicants Junior Firefighters - Ages 16 or 17:

Training Expectations:
Probationary Firefighters are expected to enter the PA Entry Level Firefighter Program. Certified training can be obtained through either the Allegheny County Fire Academy or SHACOG. The SHACOG program generally follows a class schedule of Thursday evenings and Saturdays, January through October with summers off. All new members are expected to complete the PA Entry Level Firefighter Mods 1-4, and Fire Fighter I certification.
Members are encouraged to continue their education with additional classes and certifications. All classes are paid for by the Whitehall Fire Company. Other training opportunities include, but are not limited to, Hazardous Material Technician, Basic Vehicle Rescue Technician, Rope Rescue/ Technical Rescue, Swift Water Rescue. All available classes can be found in the Allegheny County Fire Academy course brochure.

Scholarship Opportunities: Allegheny County offers a scholarship for volunteer firefighters through the Community College of Allegheny County called FireVEST.
Requirements for FireVEST through Allegheny County:
The FireVEST scholarship covers all books, tuition, and fees for 65 credits. More information can be obtained by clicking any FireVEST.
Requirements for FireVEST through Allegheny County:
- Must be a volunteer firefighter at any company within Allegheny County.
- Must be a volunteer firefighter for 5 years starting when your scholarship is accepted.
- Must obtain Pro-board Firefighter I within 2 years of being accepted. (Firefighter I is provided through the basic training)
- Must maintain a GPA of 2.0 or higher.
- Must take at least one credited class every semester.
